El porno estimula en un plazo muy corto la segregación de dopamina, por lo tanto existe una preocupación por parte de los terapeutas y consejeros sexuales estaban comenzando a asociar el incremento del consumo de pornografía en los hombres jóvenes con un aumento de casos de impotencia y eyaculación precoz en ese mismo grupo de edad. Se trataba de jóvenes saludables sin patologías físicas ni psicológicas que pudieran justificar una disfunción sexual. La pornografía estaba insensibilizando de forma progresiva la sexualidad de esos hombres. Dados los efectos de esta insensibilización en la mayoría de los sujetos masculinos, los investigadores descubrieron que estos necesitaban unos niveles superiores de estimulación para conseguir el mismo nivel de excitación. Este efecto de la dopamina explica por qué el porno tiende a ser más y más duro: las imágenes sexuales comunes han perdido finalmente su poder, llevando a los consumidores a necesitar nuevas imágenes que rompan tabúes de otros tipos con el objetivo de alcanzar la misma satisfacción. Además, algunos hombres (y mujeres) tienen lo que se denomina "agujero de dopamina". Sus sistemas de recompensa cerebral son menos eficientes, lo que les predispone a convertirse en adictos a un porno cada vez más extremo con mayor facilidad.
